てならないCannot help feeling or thinking
Expresses a thought, impression, or emotion that arises spontaneously and remains strongly present in the mind. It often corresponds to “cannot help feeling” or “cannot shake the thought that.”
A feeling that stays with you
The speaker is not deliberately choosing to think or feel something. The impression or emotion keeps arising on its own and is difficult to dismiss. This makes the construction especially natural with persistent suspicions, convictions, regret, puzzlement, and concern.
彼の説明には、どこか矛盾があるように思えてならない。
It is impossible to shake the feeling that there is some contradiction in his explanation.
Analyze長年支えてくださった皆様に十分なお礼もできず、残念でならない。
I deeply regret being unable to thank adequately everyone who supported me over the years.
AnalyzeSubjective, even in formal contexts
The construction may appear in formal speech or writing, but it still presents a personal mental reaction rather than a detached fact. With another person as the experiencer, make the source clear through reporting or perspective marking.
彼は、決勝に出られなかったことが残念でならないと語った。
He said that he deeply regretted being unable to compete in the final.
AnalyzeThree forms that look or feel similar
てしかたがない and its conversational variant are broader and more natural for everyday sensations or urges. てたまらない emphasizes intensity that feels unbearable, especially with bodily sensations, desire, liking, or dislike. By contrast, てならない is more reflective and has narrower word preferences. Do not confuse it with てはならない, which contains an extra particle and states a prohibition.
