Bring something to completion

Attach がる or げる to a verb stem to present a task or creation as finished. The first form focuses on the resulting finished item; the second focuses on someone completing it.

Choose the viewpoint

Use がる when the finished item is the subject. Use げる when the sentence presents the person or group doing the work. This often creates a natural pair with the finished item marked by in the first sentence and by in the second.

The same event from two viewpoints

Both sentences describe the cake reaching completion, but they choose different subjects.

The cake has just finished baking.

Analyze

The cake is presented as reaching its finished state.

The pastry chef finished baking the cake.

Analyze

The pastry chef is presented as bringing the cake to completion.

A recognizable finished result

This pattern works best when the activity has a recognizable finished result: a completed manuscript, a baked loaf, a woven fabric, or a fully investigated matter. The last can stress that an investigation was carried out thoroughly enough to reach a complete result.

Completing a piece of work

The editor finished writing the manuscript before the deadline.

Analyze

Completion, exhaustive action, and upward movement

げる emphasizes producing a finished piece of writing. By contrast, emphasizes reading all the way through. Also, not every compound ending in がる expresses completion: some describe literal upward movement.

The children ran up the stairs in one burst.

Analyze

Non-target directional use: this describes movement upward, not bringing a task or product to completion.
