かのようだかのようにAs if

かのようだ presents a whole situation as if it were true, usually to create a vivid comparison that is unreal, exaggerated, or contrary to known facts. It is stronger and more rhetorical than an ordinary comparison.

Building an unreal scene

The clause before かのようだ supplies the imagined scene. The sentence does not normally claim that this scene may really be true; it uses that scene to describe how someone acts, how something looks, or how an experience feels.

The three main forms

Use かのようだった to complete a description, かのように before an action or state, and かのような before a noun.

Compared with a basic resemblance

Basic comparison with ようだ covers ordinary resemblance broadly. Adding the clause-framing presents a fuller imagined scenario—something is described as though an unreal or exaggerated event were true.
