どうFellow members; among themselves

どう groups people or things that share a type, situation, or relationship. It often draws attention to what those members are or do in relation to one another.

Shared membership and mutual relationships

The noun before どう tells you what the members have in common. They may belong to the same category, be in the same situation, or stand in the same kind of relationship. The expression can refer to two people or to a larger group.

What the members share

These examples move from a pair to a larger group and from a shared relationship to a shared situation.

Analyze

The point is the relationship between the two people, not merely that both are friends with someone.

Analyze

りゅうがくせいどうあつまって、せいかつじょうなやみをはなった。

Analyze

This can describe any number of international students; it does not imply exactly two.

Using the whole expression as a noun

Once formed, the entire expression behaves like a noun. It can take particles, or it can be followed by to describe a following noun.

Relations among the members

Analyze

となりどうきょうりょくして、にわかたづけた。

Analyze

Not just a plural or companion marker

たち simply forms a plural or associated group. The particle can identify a companion in one action. By contrast, どう presents the participants as matching or fellow members and often highlights their relationship with one another.

なかさんたちさきかえりました。

Mr. Tanaka and the others went home early.

Analyze

This only identifies a group; it says nothing about a mutual relationship within it.

なかさんともりさんはどうりょうどうです。

Mr. Tanaka and Ms. Mori are colleagues.

Analyze

Here the suffix explicitly characterizes the relationship between the two people.
