ことだConsidered advice

ことだ presents doing—or avoiding—an action as the appropriate or best course. It is especially natural for considered, teacherly, or reflective advice.

How it works

The speaker has considered a problem or goal and identifies one course of action as sensible. Frames meaning “if you want to…” or “in order to…” are particularly natural because they establish the situation before the recommendation.

Affirmative and negative advice

The affirmative form recommends an action; the negative form recommends avoiding one.
