たびにEvery time; whenever
たびに says that something happens on every or nearly every occasion when a repeatable event occurs. The recurring result can be a deliberate action, an automatic reaction, or a gradual change.
A recurring link between two events
The part before たびに gives the occasion that repeats. The rest of the sentence gives what happens again on those occasions. The expression presents this as a regular connection, not merely something that happened once or twice.
Actions and changes
The recurring result may be chosen deliberately or may happen on its own.
去年は出張するたびに、現地の菓子を一箱買った。
Last year, every time I went on a business trip, I bought a box of local sweets.
AnalyzeBuying the sweets is a deliberate action repeated on each trip. Although the sentence is about last year, the verb before たびに remains in dictionary form.
引っ越しのたびに、持ち物が少しずつ減っていった。
Each time I moved, my belongings gradually dwindled.
Analyze引っ越し is an event noun, so it is followed by のたびに. The sentence describes a change that develops across successive moves.
Choosing among recurrence expressions
With a repeatable verb event, ごとに can overlap with たびに. However, ごとに also distributes things by numerical units or groups, whereas たびに specifically frames recurring event occasions. につけ is more literary and is especially associated with thoughts or feelings that naturally arise on recurring occasions; たびに is the broader, ordinary choice.
