なら takes a situation, topic, or possibility as a premise and gives a response, judgment, suggestion, or plan that applies to it. It is especially natural when responding to something just mentioned.
A premise followed by a response
The part before なら sets the situation under discussion. The rest says what the speaker recommends, intends, or judges in that situation. Unlike a simple sequence of events, the premise does not have to happen first.
Responding to new information
来週、北海道へ行きます。
I'm going to Hokkaido next week.
Analyze北海道へ行くなら、海の近くのホテルがおすすめです。
If you're going to Hokkaido, I recommend a hotel near the sea.

The response can come first in time
日本へ留学するなら、出発前に保険に入っておいたほうがいいです。
If you're going to study in Japan, you should get insurance before departure.
AnalyzeThe insurance must be arranged before the study-abroad period begins. なら works because the trip is the premise for the advice, not the first event in a time sequence.
Making the connection to context explicit
のなら can make it clearer that the premise comes from known circumstances or an explanation. In conversation, んだったら often serves the same purpose. The shorter んなら is very casual and can sound rough depending on the relationship and tone.
Premise versus sequence
なら means that the following response applies under a premise; the response may even be preparation that happens earlier. たら normally presents the second event as occurring after the first event or condition is reached. Do not replace one mechanically with the other just because both can translate as “if.”
駅に着いたら、電話してください。
Please call when you arrive at the station.
