のにFor use in; useful for
のに marks the action for which an item, method, place, condition, or resource is useful, suitable, needed, or used.
How it works
The verb before の is turned into a noun-like expression: “doing the action.” The following に connects that activity to an expression of usefulness, suitability, use, or need. In practice, the sentence answers a question such as “What is this useful for?” or “What is needed to do this?”
Common ways to use it
Notice how the expression after のに evaluates something or describes its use.

AnalyzeWhat the sentence focuses on
The main point is normally the value, use, or requirement of an item, method, place, amount of time, or other resource. The construction does not simply state why a person chooses to perform another action.
Usefulness versus an actor's purpose
Use のに when the sentence evaluates what is good, useful, needed, or used for an activity. Use ために when an actor performs one action with the intention of achieving another purpose.

I study every night in order to earn a qualification.
AnalyzeHere the studying is an intentional action performed to achieve a goal, so ために is natural.
