Plural or associated group suffix

attaches to certain pronouns, names, and expressions for people to present them as a group. After a name, it can mean that person together with relevant associates.

What kind of group it marks

かれ normally presents several male or mixed-gender people already understood from context. ぼく presents a group including the speaker and is common in casual speech. The suffix marks a group but does not state its exact size.

Common pronoun forms

These are established combinations rather than a rule that freely creates the plural of every noun.

かれらいげつ日本にほんします。

They are moving to Japan next month.

Analyze

ぼくほうえきまえおう。

Let's meet in front of the station after school.

Analyze

ぼく includes the speaker and sounds natural in casual conversation.

これらぜんしょかんからりたほんです。

These are all books borrowed from the library.

Analyze

A person and associates

After a person's name, can mean that person and the other people associated with them in the situation. The context should make the associates identifiable.

はっぴょうたんとうするのはなかさんと二人ふたりどうりょうだ。なかさんらぜんちゅうかいじょういた。

Tanaka and two colleagues are giving the presentation. Tanaka and the others arrived at the venue in the morning.

Analyze

The first sentence identifies the associates, so the group in the second sentence is clear.

Compact labels in writing

きゅうじょたいいんよるまでそうさくつづけた。

The rescue workers continued the search until night.

Analyze

Human role labels followed by the suffix are concise and common in reports and other informational writing.

Choosing between two group suffixes

and たち overlap, but they are not freely interchangeable. The safest approach is to learn common combinations: かれ is a standard neutral form, while the choice with first-person words varies with familiarity, social distance, region, and speaker. Do not reduce the difference to a universal rule that one suffix is polite and the other rude.
