とかとかThings like A and B

とか~とか presents nouns, actions, states, or possibilities as loose examples from a larger, unfinished list. It often corresponds to “things like A and B” or “doing things like A and B.”

An intentionally unfinished list

Each item followed by とか is presented as one representative example. The speaker is not claiming to give a complete list, and the items often feel like suggestions chosen casually from a broader category.

Listing nouns

りょこうには、えとかくすりとかっていきます。

For trips, I take things like spare clothes and medicine.

Analyze

The object particle comes after the completed list: えとかくすりとかを.

Listing actions and conditions

Unlike a noun-only list connector, とか can follow whole plain clauses.

きゅうじつは、ほんむとかきんじょさんするとかしてごします。

On my days off, I spend my time doing things like reading books and walking around the neighborhood.

Analyze

部屋へやあついとかおとうるさいとかになることがあればおしえてください。

Analyze

かいでは、えいぎょうかんばすとかやくせいにするとか、いくつかあんました。

At the meeting, several ideas came up, such as extending business hours and switching to reservations.

Analyze

Leaving the rest unstated

Only one とか is needed when one example is enough to suggest other similar choices. This is especially natural in casual suggestions and advice.

つかれたは、おんがくくとかして、ゆっくりやすみます。

When I am tired, I relax by doing something like listening to music.

Analyze

Listening to music is one example; other relaxing activities are understood.

A more conversational kind of noun list

is a more neutral connector for an incomplete list of nouns and normally appears between the listed items. とか~とか sounds more conversational and can also follow complete clauses.

つくえうえほんノートがあります。

There are books, notebooks, and similar things on the desk.

Analyze

Here gives a neutral, incomplete noun list.
