とかTentative hearsay
とか passes on something the speaker has heard without firmly confirming its source, details, or accuracy. It often corresponds to “I heard that...” or a noncommittal “apparently....”
What it communicates
The speaker presents the information as something circulating through conversation, rumor, or another indirect channel. The report may be true, but the speaker is not personally guaranteeing it. Sentence-final とか can end the thought without naming exactly who said it, so the surrounding context should still make it plausible that the information was heard somewhere.
Passing on an unconfirmed report
近所の人から聞いたんだけど、駅前のパン屋、来月閉店するとか。
I heard from someone in the neighborhood that the bakery by the station is apparently closing next month.
AnalyzeThe speaker identifies a general channel but does not present the closing as confirmed.
同僚の話では、新しい部長は元新聞記者だとか。
According to a coworker, the new department head was apparently a newspaper reporter.
AnalyzeBecause the report ends in an affirmative noun, だとか is used.
When the sentence continues
とかで can present the report as the background for what follows. とかいう話だ makes it explicit that this is a story or report being passed around. Both retain the same vague, unconfirmed stance.
Do not judge by the form alone
The same-looking とか can list examples, especially when items are repeated; that is a separate use, not hearsay. For reporting, んだって more directly relays what someone said, while hearsay とか creates more distance and vagueness. Hearsay そうだ is a more neutral way to report received information and does not inherently sound as tentative.
