方Way to do; method
方 attaches to a verb stem and turns the action into a noun meaning “the way to do it” or “how to do it.”
A method becomes a noun
The completed expression behaves like a noun. You can mark it as a subject or object, describe it, or ask whether someone knows or understands it. It often corresponds naturally to “how to…” in English.
Common uses
Keeping a needed particle
東京駅への行き方を教えてください。
Please tell me how to get to Tokyo Station.
Analyzeへ remains to show the destination and is followed by の before the method noun.
Method versus advice
The method suffix is read かた and creates a noun meaning “way.” In the advice pattern たほうがいい, the same kanji is read ほう and means that one option is preferable. The two readings are not interchangeable.
今日は早く寝たほうがいいです。
You should go to bed early today.
AnalyzeThis gives advice; it does not name a method.
