のが好き・ 上手・ 下手Likes doing; good or bad at doing
Use this pattern to say that someone likes doing an activity or is good or bad at it. The activity is expressed as a plain-form verb clause followed by のが.
How the activity fits into the sentence
の turns the preceding activity clause into a noun-like expression: “doing that activity.” The following が marks that whole activity as what is liked or evaluated for skill.
Preference and skill
好き expresses preference, while 上手 and 下手 describe skill. Liking something does not mean being good at it.
Skill is not the same as ability
上手・下手 evaluates how skilled someone is. ことができる and potential verbs instead say that an action is possible or that someone can do it. A person can be able to perform an activity without being good at it.
