Use this pattern to say where a person or thing already under discussion is. Mark that person or thing with は, and mark the location with に.
What the sentence is about
The sentence begins with the person or thing whose location you want to give. In this use, the particle は is written は but pronounced わ. The location comes next with に, followed by the appropriate existence verb.
Things and living beings
Use ある for things and いる for people and animals.
Asking where something is
The answer does not repeat the key because the question has already established what is being located.
Known entity or place first?
Use the target pattern when the person or thing is already known and you are saying where it is. By contrast, use location + に + entity + が + ある / いる when the place is the starting point and you are introducing what is there.
