The speaker presents something as true or as their firm belief.
Indicates a logical conclusion or that something is a matter of course. Often translates to 'so that means...' or 'it follows that...'.
彼は日本に10年住んでいたから、日本語が上手なわけだ。
He lived in Japan for 10 years, so it makes sense that his Japanese is good.
Expresses a strong conviction or assertion that something must be the case. Similar to 'must be' or 'no doubt'.
彼は犯人に違いない。
He must be the culprit.
The speaker strongly maintains a position, often in the face of disagreement.
To insist or persist in saying something. Often used when someone stubbornly maintains a claim.
彼は自分が正しいと言い張った。
He insisted that he was right.
To assert, claim, or advocate. A general verb for putting forward an opinion or argument.
彼は無実を主張した。
He asserted his innocence.
To declare or affirm with certainty. Stronger than 主張する, implying no room for doubt.
彼はそれが真実だと断言した。
He asserted that it was the truth.
Used in debates or discussions to put forward a point.
A claim, contention, or argument. The noun form of 主張する.
彼の主張は説得力がある。
His assertion is persuasive.
One's side of the story or what one has to say. Often used when someone defends their position.
To state or demand one's rights or authority firmly.
Also used for asserting rights, independence, etc.
彼らは権利を主張した。
They asserted their rights.
To stick to one's principles or assert one's will consistently. Implies perseverance.
彼は自分の信念を貫いた。
He asserted his beliefs (stuck to them).
The English word 'assertion' covers many nuances. Direct translations like アサーション are rarely used outside technical contexts. Choose the Japanese expression based on the specific intent: stating a fact, insisting, claiming, etc.
主張 (shuchō) is a general claim or argument, while 断言 (dangen) is a definitive, no-doubt assertion. Use 断言 when you are absolutely certain and want to emphasize that.
彼が無実だと主張したが、信じてもらえなかった。
His assertion that he was innocent was not believed.
彼女は会議で大胆な主張をした。
