「隣接する」 is formal and often used for buildings or land. 「隣にある」 is casual and used for everyday objects or places.
図書館は市役所に隣接している。

The convenience store is next to the post office. (casual)
「隣」 implies direct adjacency. For 'nearby' but not adjacent, use 「近く」 (chikaku).
駅は近くにあります。
The station is nearby. (not necessarily adjacent)
