Expressing that you are tired of something, annoyed, or have had enough. Japanese has several common expressions ranging from casual to formal.
To say you are fed up with a situation or thing in a general, everyday sense.
A very common and natural way to say you are fed up or sick of something. Can be used with に or だ.
毎日同じことの繰り返しでうんざりだ。
I'm fed up with the same routine every day.
I'm fed up with his excuses.
Literally 'that's enough already', used when you've had enough of something and want it to stop. Casual but strong.
こんな仕事はもうたくさんだ。
I've had enough of this kind of work.
彼女のわがままにはもうたくさんだ。
I'm fed up with her selfishness.
Means 'to become disgusted/fed up'. Often used when you are emotionally tired of something.
雨ばかりで嫌になる。
I'm fed up with all this rain.
毎日残業で嫌になるよ。
I'm getting fed up with working overtime every day.
Emphasizes being thoroughly bored and tired of something repetitive. Stronger than just 飽きる.
彼の自慢話には飽き飽きしている。
I'm fed up with his boasting.
To express a stronger feeling of disgust or that you can no longer tolerate something.
Literally 'cannot endure/stand'. A direct way to say you are fed up to the point of not being able to take it anymore.
この暑さにはもう我慢できない。
I can't stand this heat anymore.
彼の態度には我慢できない。
I'm fed up with his attitude.
Similar to 我慢できない, but slightly more formal/literary. Means 'unbearable'.
この騒音には耐えられない。
I can't stand this noise.
Slang for annoying/irritating. Very casual, used mostly by younger people. Can be rude.
Very informal and can sound harsh. Avoid in polite conversation.
To express being fed up in a more formal or written context.
A formal term meaning to be fed up, disgusted, or to shrink back from something unpleasant. Often used in writing.
彼の無責任さには辟易している。
I am fed up with his irresponsibility.
Literally 'to run out of amiability'. Means to be completely disgusted with someone and lose all affection/patience. Strong and somewhat formal.
彼の嘘には愛想が尽きた。
I'm completely fed up with his lies.
うんざり is a general feeling of being fed up or annoyed, while 飽き飽き specifically emphasizes boredom and repetition. Use うんざり for irritation, 飽き飽き for being tired of something monotonous.
彼の話は長くてうんざりだ。
His story is so long I'm fed up.
同じ曲ばかりで飽き飽きする。
I'm fed up with hearing the same song over and over.
Do not translate 'fed up' literally into Japanese. Phrases like 食べさせられる or 餌を与えられる are incorrect and will not be understood. Use the expressions above.
あいつ、うざいんだよ。
That guy is so annoying (I'm fed up with him).
