A structure built to protect a harbor or shore from waves. In Japanese, the most common word is 防波堤 (ぼうはてい), but other terms exist for specific types or contexts.
A barrier built out into the sea to protect a harbor, anchorage, or beach from the force of waves.
The standard, neutral term for a breakwater. Used in everyday conversation, news, and technical contexts.

Literally 'wave blocker'. A more general term that can refer to any structure or device that blocks waves, including smaller or temporary ones. Less formal than 防波堤.

In technical or engineering contexts, 防波堤 is the precise term. May be used in official documents or construction.

A breakwater built parallel to the shore, not connected to land, often to reduce beach erosion.
Specifically an offshore or detached breakwater. Common in coastal engineering and geography.

Offshore breakwaters help prevent coastal erosion.
Literally 'offshore breakwater'. Similar to 離岸堤 but may be used more broadly for any breakwater located offshore.

防波堤 (ぼうはてい) is the standard term for a large, engineered breakwater. 波除け (なみよけ) is a broader, more casual term that can refer to any wave-blocking structure, including small ones like wave-dissipating blocks or even natural barriers.
In everyday conversation, 防波堤 is safe. If you're talking about a specific type (offshore, floating, etc.), use the technical terms only if needed. For general 'breakwater', 防波堤 is understood by all.
