General verb for 'fail' or 'make a mistake'. Can be used for exams, but 落ちる is more natural. Better for failing at a task or attempt.

To be unsuccessful in an attempt, plan, or action.
The standard verb for 'fail' in the sense of making a mistake or not succeeding in a task.
I failed at cooking. / My cooking attempt failed.
The plan ended in failure.
Means 'doesn't go well' or 'isn't successful'. A softer, more conversational way to express failure.
No matter how many times I try, it doesn't work out.
To fail and become discouraged, to suffer a setback. Implies emotional impact and giving up.
He failed in his dream / suffered a setback in his dream.
A fault or defect in someone's character or ability.
A fault, defect, or weak point. Commonly used for personal shortcomings.
His failing is that he's short-tempered.
Weak point, vulnerability. Often used for skills or character.
Demerit, weak point. Often used in contrast to 長所 (strong point).
Deterioration of health, strength, or faculties.
Both mean 'fail an exam', but 落ちる is casual and conversational, while 不合格になる is formal and often used in written announcements or official results.
I failed yesterday's test. (casual)
You have failed this examination. (formal)
While 失敗する can technically be used for failing an exam, 落ちる is much more natural and common. Using 失敗する may sound like you made a mistake during the exam rather than simply not passing.
Everyone has their failings.
数学が弱点だ。
Math is my weak point / failing.
私の短所は優柔不断なところです。
My failing is that I'm indecisive.
年をとって足が弱った。
As I got older, my legs have failed me / become weak.
