The literal translation '頭を失う' (あたまをうしなう) is not used in Japanese to mean losing composure. It would be interpreted as physically losing one's head.
慌てる covers a wide range from mild fluster to panic, while パニックになる implies a stronger, often chaotic loss of control. In casual conversation, パニックになる is very common for 'freaking out'.
The most common and versatile way to say someone panics or loses their cool. Can be used for minor flusters or major panic.
彼は試験中に慌ててしまった。
He lost his head during the exam.
慌てないで、落ち着いてください。
Don't lose your head; stay calm.
Directly borrowed from English, used for more intense panic or losing control. Very common in casual speech.
火事でみんなパニックになった。
Everyone lost their heads in the fire.
To lose one's composure visibly, often with emotional outbursts. More formal/literary than 慌てる.
彼女はその知らせを聞いて取り乱した。
She lost her head when she heard the news.
To be flustered and confused, often visibly. Slightly old-fashioned or literary.
突然の質問にうろたえた。
I lost my head at the sudden question.
Literally 'forget oneself', used when someone loses self-control and acts out of character due to strong emotion.
怒りで我を忘れて叫んでしまった。
I lost my head in anger and ended up shouting.
彼は恋に我を忘れている。
He has lost his head over love.
A more literal 'lose one's cool/calm'. Suitable for both spoken and written contexts.
彼はプレッシャーで冷静さを失った。
He lost his head under pressure.
To fly into a rage and lose control. Stronger than just being upset; implies violent anger.
侮辱されて逆上した。
He lost his head when insulted.
To be so elated or flustered with happiness that you lose your composure. Often used when receiving praise or good news.
褒められて舞い上がってしまった。
I lost my head when I was praised.
To be in high spirits and act carelessly. Often used for festive moods or infatuation.
彼は成功に浮かれて無茶をした。
He lost his head over his success and did something reckless.
To be ecstatic and completely lose one's sense of reality. Stronger than 舞い上がる.
宝くじが当たって有頂天になった。
He lost his head when he won the lottery.
