Translation guide
To leave a place of residence, taking one's belongings. In Japanese, the most common way to express this is with the verb 引っ越す (hikkosu), but other expressions exist depending on context, such as leaving a shared living situation or moving out of a room.
To leave one's current home and move to a new one, typically with belongings.
The standard verb for moving house. It implies packing up and relocating to a new residence.
来月、東京に引っ越します。
I'm moving to Tokyo next month.
彼は先週引っ越した。
He moved out last week.
A noun-based phrase meaning 'to do a move'. Slightly more formal or descriptive than the verb alone.
引っ越しをする予定です。
I plan to move out.
A formal term used in official contexts or written notices.
転居のお知らせを送りました。
I sent a notice of moving out.
To leave a place where one lives with others, often implying independence or separation.
Literally 'leave the house'. Commonly used when someone moves out of their parents' home or a shared house.
彼は18歳で家を出た。
He moved out at 18.
そろそろ家を出ようと思っている。
I'm thinking about moving out soon.
Means 'to start living alone'. Used when moving out to live independently.
来年から一人暮らしを始めます。
I'm moving out and living on my own next year.
Literally 'go out and leave'. Can sound abrupt or emotional, often used when someone is told to leave or leaves under strained circumstances.
Can be rude if used inappropriately. Avoid in polite conversation.
出て行け!
Move out! (Get out!)
To vacate a temporary lodging, often by a specific time.
Standard term for checking out of a hotel or similar accommodation.
ホテルをチェックアウトする時間です。
It's time to check out of the hotel.
Literally 'leave the room'. Used in contexts like dormitories or shared housing.
寮の部屋を出なければならない。
I have to move out of the dorm room.
引っ越す focuses on the physical act of relocating to a new residence, while 家を出る emphasizes leaving a home (often the family home) and may not specify the destination. Use 引っ越す when talking about moving logistics, and 家を出る when discussing life changes like becoming independent.
引っ越し業者に頼んだ。
I hired a moving company.
親と喧嘩して家を出た。
I had a fight with my parents and moved out.
Avoid directly translating 'move out' as 動き出す (ugokidasu), which means 'to start moving' in a physical sense, not to change residence.
