Translation guide
A form of natural selection where individuals with certain traits are more likely to attract mates and reproduce. In Japanese, this is a technical term from biology, most commonly expressed as 性選択 or 性淘汰.
The evolutionary mechanism by which traits that improve mating success become more common.
The standard modern term in biology. Literally 'sex selection'. Widely used in academic and educational contexts.
性選択は、配偶者をめぐる競争によって特定の形質が進化する過程です。
Sexual selection is the process by which certain traits evolve due to competition for mates.
An alternative term, literally 'sex culling/selection'. Slightly older or more formal, but still common in biological literature.
Less common variant using 性的 (sexual) instead of 性. Understandable but not the preferred term.
性的選択の理論は、多くの動物の派手な装飾を説明します。
The theory of sexual selection explains the flashy ornaments of many animals.
In everyday conversation, the concept is rarely discussed. If you need to explain it to a non-specialist, you might say 「異性を惹きつけるための進化の仕組み」 (a mechanism of evolution for attracting the opposite sex) rather than using the technical term.
ダーウィンは性淘汰の概念を提唱しました。
Darwin proposed the concept of sexual selection.
