I went for an interview but was shut out at the door.
To keep the opposing team from scoring any points.
To shut out the opponent (in baseball, soccer, etc.). Literally 'complete seal'.
ピッチャーが相手を完封した。
The pitcher shut out the opposing team.
To hold the opponent scoreless. More descriptive.
守備が相手を無得点に抑えた。
The defense shut out the opponent.
To deliberately ignore or suppress a thought, memory, or feeling.
To try not to think about something. Natural and common.
嫌なことは考えないようにしている。
I try to shut out unpleasant thoughts.
To ignore; can be used for ignoring feelings or external stimuli.

He shut out the criticism.
To cut off or block out (noise, information, emotions). More formal.
外部の情報を遮断した。
