How to express the idea of 'this or that' in Japanese, covering choices, alternatives, and vague references.
The speaker presents two options and asks the listener to choose one.
Use か between two nouns or options to mean 'A or B'. This is the most direct way to offer a choice.
コーヒーか紅茶、どちらがいいですか。
Which would you like, coffee or tea?
それとも is used between two clauses or options, often in questions, to mean 'or'. It emphasizes the choice between alternatives.
映画に行きますか、それとも家にいますか。
Will you go to the movies, or stay home?
Combining か and それとも for emphasis, but it can sound redundant. More common in careful speech.
電車で行くか、それともバスで行きますか。
Will you go by train, or by bus?
The speaker refers to something unspecified, like 'something or other'.
何か means 'something'. It can be used to express vagueness, similar to 'this or that' when you don't specify exactly what.
何か食べるものはありますか。
Is there something to eat?
あれこれ means 'this and that' or 'various things'. It implies a range of unspecified items.
Casual Kansai dialect expression meaning 'this and that' or 'one thing or another'. Used in informal speech.
The speaker indicates that any of the options is acceptable.
どちらでもいい means 'either is fine'. It's a common way to say you don't mind which option is chosen.
A：コーヒーと紅茶、どちらがいい？ B：どちらでもいいよ。
A: Which would you like, coffee or tea? B: Either is fine.
Casual version of どちらでもいい. Used among friends.
どっちでもいいから、早く決めて。
Either is fine, so decide quickly.
The speaker gives a non-exhaustive list, implying 'things like this or that'.
とか is used to list examples, meaning 'things like A and B'. It implies there are other similar things.
休みの日は、映画を見るとか、買い物に行くとかして過ごします。
On my days off, I spend time doing things like watching movies or going shopping.
や is used to list items, and など means 'etc.' or 'and so on'. Together they mean 'A, B, and so on'.
机の上に本やペンなどがあります。
There are books, pens, and so on, on the desk.
Do not directly translate 'this or that' as これかそれ. While grammatically possible, it sounds unnatural in most contexts. Use the patterns above depending on the intended meaning.
あれこれ考えて、結局決められなかった。
I thought about this and that, but in the end I couldn't decide.
I was busy with this and that.
