Translation guide
Describes someone with deep understanding, good judgment, or knowledge gained through experience. Japanese offers several nuanced terms depending on the type of wisdom and context.

A straightforward and common way to say 'wise person'. 賢い means intelligent, clever, or wise.
彼はとても賢い人だ。
He is a very wise person.
An older person respected for their life experience and advice.
Literally 'senior in life', used for someone with more life experience who can offer guidance. Warm and respectful.

Used in fixed expressions or proverbs about wisdom.
A person of virtue and wisdom, often from Confucian philosophy. Appears in sayings like '君子危うきに近寄らず' (A wise man keeps away from danger).
賢い人 is the most everyday term for a wise or smart person. 賢者 implies a sage-like figure, often with a philosophical depth. 知恵者 focuses on practical wisdom and cleverness. Use 賢い人 for general compliments, 賢者 for formal or literary descriptions, and 知恵者 when emphasizing resourcefulness.
The English phrase 'wise guy' (a sarcastic or annoying person) does not translate directly. Do not use 賢い人 for this meaning. Instead, use 生意気な奴 (なまいきなやつ) or similar terms depending on context.
A sage or wise man, often with a philosophical or historical connotation. Used in formal or literary contexts.
古代の賢者は自然と調和して生きた。
Ancient sages lived in harmony with nature.
A person of wisdom, emphasizing practical intelligence and resourcefulness. Slightly less common than 賢者.
彼は村一番の知恵者として尊敬されている。

Literally 'knower of things', often used for someone who is knowledgeable or well-informed rather than deeply wise. Can be casual.

An elder or senior figure, often in a community or organization, respected for wisdom and experience.
