坐 is an ancient pictograph of two people kneeling or sitting on the ground, with 土 (earth) beneath them. The modern form preserves this image of sitting on the earth.
Two people 人 sit facing each other on the earth 土: 坐 means to sit.
For ザ, imagine sitting down with a dramatic 'za!' sound as you plop onto the ground: za -> ザ.
