not, must not, do not, be not
勿 centers on prohibition or negation: expressing that something is not, must not, or should not be done.
勿 is an ancient pictograph of a flag or banner, later borrowed for its sound to express negation. The modern form retains the basic shape but the original flag meaning is no longer used.
The shape looks like a wrapped bundle with two strokes inside, as if something is tied up and marked 'do not open'.
For モチ, imagine a sign saying 'do not touch' on a freshly made mochi (もち) rice cake: mochi -> モチ, and you must not eat it yet.
