appearing quite ...; looking very ...
Attaches to the stem of an adjective or the -masu stem of a verb to mean 'looking very ...' or 'seeming quite ...'. Used in casual, often slightly negative or emphatic descriptions. Common in dialects such as Kansai-ben, but also found in colloquial standard Japanese.
That shop looked expensive and hard to enter, but when I went in it was surprisingly cheap. Still, it does feel a bit pricey-looking.
His explanations always sound really difficult and I don't quite get them.
The exact derivation is uncertain. It may be related to the adjective-forming suffix たい or a contraction of ぼい (from っぽい) with emphatic gemination, but this is speculative.
