Sentence-final conjunction expressing strong discontent, regret, or complaint about a situation that is contrary to expectation. Often used when the speaker feels that things could have been different. The 'I wish that' nuance appears when the preceding clause describes a desired but unrealized outcome.

• 早はやく言いってくれればよかったものを。

  If only you had told me sooner.

• もう少すこし頑がん張ばれば合ごう格かくできたものを。

  If you had tried a little harder, you could have passed.

• 黙だまっていればばれなかったものを、どうして話はなしたんだ。

  If you had kept quiet, you wouldn't have been found out, so why did you talk?
