adventitious root
Botanical term for a root that grows from an unusual location, such as a stem or leaf, rather than from another root.
Adventitious roots are growing from the tomato stem.
Compound of 不定 (futei, 'indeterminate, adventitious') + 根 (kon, 'root'). The term is a direct calque from Western botanical terminology.
