Chūnagon was one of the offices in the Department of State, ranking next to Dainagon.

平へい安あん時じ代だいには、中ちゅう納な言ごんは公く卿ぎょうの一いち員いんとして重じゅう要ような役やく割わりを果はたした。

In the Heian period, Chūnagon played an important role as a member of the high court nobility.
