Archaic term for the number sixteen, formed by combining two (二) and eight (八). Not used in modern Japanese; replaced by 十六 (じゅうろく).

• 古こ典てんでは「二に八はち」と書かいて「にはち」と読よみ、十じゅう六ろくを意い味みした。

  In classical texts, '二八' was read as 'にはち' and meant sixteen.
