Archaic term referring to the body of administrative and civil law in historical Japanese legal systems, particularly the ritsuryō codes. Not used in modern legal contexts.
In the ritsuryō system, the ryō was a compilation of regulations concerning administration and civil affairs.

The character 令 originally meant 'order' or 'decree'. In the context of ancient Japanese law, it came to designate the administrative and civil statutes, as opposed to criminal law (律).
