bestow a kanji from one's name upon someone
Archaic historical expression referring to the practice where a nobleman granted one of the kanji from his own name to a vassal, a young man coming of age, or another person as a mark of honor. Used in contexts of feudal Japan.
戦国時代、主君が武功のあった家臣に偏諱を賜うことがあった。
In the Warring States period, a lord would sometimes bestow one of the kanji from his name upon a meritorious retainer.
