noun
side-brush technique; painting with the body of the brush
A calligraphy and ink-painting technique where the brush is held at an angle so that the side of the bristles, rather than just the tip, touches the paper. This produces a thicker, broader line. Contrasts with 直筆 (ちょくひつ), which uses only the brush tip.
