Intransitive verb meaning to become frozen or covered with ice. Often used for water, ground, or objects. Literary or somewhat poetic; in everyday speech 凍る (こおる) is more common.
冬の朝、池が凍てていた。
On a winter morning, the pond was frozen over.
凍てるような寒さの中
I walked in the freezing cold.
