Used specifically for beheading, often in historical or dramatic contexts. The kana spelling はねる is standard; the kanji 刎ねる is rare.

• 戦せん国ごく時じ代だいには、敗やぶれた武ぶ将しょうがはねられることもあった。

  In the Warring States period, defeated commanders were sometimes beheaded.
