name; take a name or alias
Used for giving a name or title to something, or for adopting a second name or alias. Often seen in historical or literary contexts.
彼は自らを「浪士」と号した。
He called himself 'Rōshi' (masterless samurai).
この寺は後に「金閣寺」と号するようになった。
This temple later came to be called 'Kinkaku-ji'.
suru verb (special)
Used for proclaiming or declaring something, often with a nuance of boasting or self-assertion. Rare in modern colloquial Japanese.
彼は自分の成功を号して回った。
He went around boasting of his success.
新聞は事件の解決を号する記事を載せた。
The newspaper ran an article declaring the resolution of the case.
