exaggerated; overblown; overdone
Describes speech, behavior, reactions, or style that is overly dramatic, grandiose, or theatrical. Often used critically.
Everyone is fed up with his exaggerated gestures.
You don't have to put it in such an overblown way.
大げさ is a near-synonym and more common in everyday speech. 大仰 is slightly more literary or formal.
Standard kanji spelling; the most common written form.
Rarely used kanji form; may be confused with 大形 (おおがた, 'large size').
Historically written 大形 and 大業 as well as 大仰, it first referred to great scale or magnitude and then to making something seem larger than it is: “exaggerated, overblown.”
