Historical term for a jail specifically for women during the Edo period. Not used for modern prisons.
During the Edo period, jails for women were established.
Compound of 女 (おんな, 'woman') and 牢 (ろう, 'jail'). The reading おんなろう follows standard kun-on compounding.
