also: うべなるかな
expression
quite right; indeed; well said
Formal or literary expression of strong agreement, often used to affirm a preceding statement as self-evidently true. Conveys a sense of 'no wonder' or 'it stands to reason'.
彼の成功は、努力の結果だ。むべなるかな。
His success is the result of hard work. Quite right, indeed.
むべなるかな、彼女が選ばれたのも当然だ。
It's no wonder she was chosen; it's only natural.
Rarely used kana form with initial う instead of む.
Derived from classical Japanese むべ (mube, 'truly, indeed') + なる (naru, attributive form of copula) + かな (kana, exclamatory particle). The form うべなるかな is a variant with the older う reading. The kanji 宜 is an ateji assignment based on meaning.
