Imperial Palace (historical term)
Historical term used especially from 1888 to 1946 to refer to the Imperial Palace. In modern Japanese, 皇居 (こうきょ) is the standard term.

Pre-war maps sometimes have 'Kyūjō' written on them.
'Kyūjō' is now mostly called the Imperial Palace (Kōkyo).
宮城 (きゅうじょう) means the pre-1946 Imperial Palace, while 宮城 (みやぎ) is the name of a Japanese prefecture; the kanji are identical but the reading and meaning differ completely.
Composed of 宮 (palace) and 城 (castle). The reading きゅうじょう is the on'yomi. Historically used to refer to the Imperial Palace, especially during the Meiji to early Showa periods.
