A subdivision of a village or rural district, smaller than an 大字 (おおあざ). Used in addresses and land registries.

• この地ち域いきの住じゅう所しょには、大おお字あざの下したに小こ字あざが付つくことがある。

  In addresses in this area, a 小字 may follow the 大字.

• 登とう記き簿ぼには小こ字あざまで記き載さいされている。

  The registry includes even the 小字.
