Historical term for house rent; in modern Japanese, 家賃 (やちん) is the standard word. 店賃 may still be encountered in historical documents or period pieces.
In Edo-period tenements, residents paid house rent to the landlord every month.
Compound of 店 (たな, 'shop, merchant house') and 賃 (ちん, 'rent, fee'). The exact historical derivation is uncertain, but the term originally referred to rent for a merchant's premises or dwelling.
