expression, i-adjective
strange; unfamiliar; mysterious; suspicious
Describes something or someone whose true nature, identity, or intentions are unknown and therefore unsettling. Often used in the negative form 得体が知れない to mean 'eerie', 'unidentifiable', or 'of unknown origin'. The literal sense 'not knowing the true nature' is the basis for the more common idiomatic use.
