conditioned existence; vicissitudes of life; perpetual change

Buddhist term for the transient, conditioned nature of all phenomena, often contrasted with 無為 (unconditioned). Also used in literary Japanese for the ups and downs of life.

• 仏ぶっ教きょうでは、この世よのすべては有う為いであり、常つねに変へん化かしていると説とく。

  Buddhism teaches that everything in this world is conditioned and constantly changing.

• 彼かれは有う為い転てん変ぺんの世よの中なかを嘆なげいた。

  He lamented the vicissitudes of life.
