godan verb (-u)
come toward; come facing (us)
Archaic verb meaning to come in the direction of the speaker or a reference point, often with a sense of facing or confronting. Not used in modern Japanese; replaced by やって来る, 向かって来る, or similar expressions.
古典の文章に「敵が来向かう」とある。
In classical texts, one finds 'the enemy comes facing us'.
Compound of 来 (ki, continuative form of 来る 'to come') + 向かう (mukau, 'to face'). The exact historical derivation is uncertain, but it follows a pattern of archaic verb compounds.
