Archaic term for a pre-Buddhist Japanese funeral custom where the body was kept in a temporary shelter (mogari) for a period of mourning before final burial. Used only in historical or archaeological contexts.

• 古こ墳ふん時じ代だいには、殯もがりの儀ぎ式しきが行おこなわれていた。

  During the Kofun period, the mogari ritual was performed.

• 殯もがりの期き間かん中ちゅう、遺い族ぞくは遺い体たいのそばで過すごした。

  During the mogari period, the bereaved family stayed near the body.
