decorative end cap of a roof tile
Refers to the ornamental disk or face at the end of a semi-cylindrical eave tile, often with patterns or inscriptions. Related to 軒丸瓦 (round eave-end tile) and 軒平瓦 (flat eave-end tile).
This decorative roof-tile end is carved with a lotus pattern.
I found a beautiful decorative tile end under the eaves of an old temple.
A flat eave-end tile; 瓦当 can also refer to the decorative end of this type.
Standard modern kanji form.
Out-dated kanji form using 當 instead of 当.
Borrowed from Chinese 瓦当, the architectural term for the decorated terminal portion of an eaves tile.
