Ateji spelling; not common in modern writing.
The origin is uncertain, but it may be a contraction of めちゃくちゃ, which itself is thought to derive from 無茶苦茶 (muchakucha), a compound of 無茶 (mucha, 'absurd') and 苦茶 (kucha, 'bitter tea'). The kanji 滅茶 and 目茶 are ateji.
